Abstract

The present work aimed to analyze the work “My Brilliant Friend”, by Elena Ferrante, in the light of Martin Heidegger's assumptions. Heideggerian philosophy brings a reflective look to human existence, in a way that sees being as openness and possibilities in a power to be. The novel in question tells the story of two girls growing up in a neighborhood in Naples, shortly after the end of the Second World War. By analyzing this narrative, we propose to understand what it can say about human existence. The way the author shows the relationship between her characters and the place in which they live was reflected alongside the idea of the being and the world as co-origineries, always on a horizon of temporality. The central friendship of the plot helped in the reflection about the non-isolated being, always with the other. Issues of gender and socioeconomic class arise throughout the book, and are discussed based on the non-essentiality brought by Heidegger, and the different possibilities of a power to be. The study shows that it is possible to achieve an understanding of human existence from literature, through fictional narratives, one can understand everyday life and the various ways of existence.
