Análise Sistêmico-Funcional da Representação da Masculinidade Hegemônica em trecho do curta-metragem All Too Well: The Short Film

Abstract

This final paper investigates characteristics of toxic hegemonic masculinity within a modern heterosexual romantic relationship by analyzing the dialogue present in the music video for the song "All Too Well: The Short Film", by American singer Taylor Swift. The investigation of the concept of hegemonic toxic masculinity was built from the texts of Chagas and Martins (2022), Connell and Messerschmidt (2013), Paula and Rocha (2019), and Nigro and Baracat (2018). The theoretical apparatus used for the linguistic investigation derives from the Systemic-Functional Linguistics of Halliday and Matthiessen (2004), Hasan (1989) and Eggins (2004). The research revealed that the woman used only four structural elements, namely: pointing out a problem, questioning legitimately, positive reinforcement of his position, and sarcastic comments. The man, in turn, made use of nine elements in his statements: denial of knowing the reason for the complaint, "false" request for clarification, sarcastic comments, reversal of responsibility, attempt to justify himself, false accusations, negative evaluations and judgments, and curse words. The transitivity analysis revealed the use of mental processes with the man in the role of Senser excusing himself from his responsibility, while the woman is represented in the roles of Carrier of negative attributes and Sayer in slanderous verbal processes constructed by the man. It is hoped that the work can contribute to a better understanding of the discussion around linguistic constructions involving discursive practices that constitute toxic hegemonic masculinity.
