Abstract

This study is dedicated to the analysis of the hydraulic tile existing in the Eixo das Trincheiras, a relevant street located in the current Historic Center of the city of João Pessoa. The study aims to value this heritage, strongly linked to the architectural production prevalent in the city during the first half of the 20th century, reflecting the ideals of progress and development arising from the Industrial Revolution. The research addresses historical aspects of the material, from its origin, referring to ancient mosaics, to its final development, with the influence of ornamental design reformers. The essay develops an in-depth study of the context in question, bringing, in addition to the historic and spatial aspects, an analysis of the tiles according to their nature, according to the type of print presented by their design, in addition to analyzing whether the designs presented are influenced by the boards produced. by Owen Jones in his work The Grammar of Ornament, if there are repetitions of the same design, and how such variables imply the diversity of the ornament, The work also analyzes the properties where the tiles are found based on existing literature on spatial design adopted in an attempt to establish the relationship between them. This information, together with the photographic records, is organized into files (included as an Appendix) with the aim of compiling the information collected and recording the existence of the tiles. This research is expected to contribute to the recording of this centuries-old legacy, which is at serious risk of disappearing because it is not recognized, and therefore preserved by protection agencies, as historical and cultural heritage of indisputable value
