| Abstract: | This study aims to investigate expressions of self-love, maternal love, and community love in the novel Beloved (2007) by American writer Toni Morrison. Such investigation considers socio-cultural, gender, and racial intersections and the way expressions of love manifest themselves in the novel. The research also explores how such affective-loving expressions are inflected by multiple narrative temporalities, seeking to understand how time and memory affect the construction of loving practices and the construction of relationships in the novel, focusing on the impact on Sethe, Baby Suggs and Denver. Thus, the research focuses on the effects that different forms of love have on the construction of characters and the way they act and exercise love. This study is qualitative in nature, developing an interpretive analysis, with excerpts from the novel being collected for analysis in dialogue with concepts such as self-love and community love, wake (vestígio/vigília), spiral time, colonial time, controlling images and rememory. To this end, the following texts were used as theoretical foundations: Tudo sobre o amor, by bell hooks (2021); No vestígio: negridade e existência, by Christina Sharpe (2023); and Descolonizando afetos, by Geni Núñez (2023), as well as texts by Patricia Hill Collins (2000), Grada Kilomba (2019), Toni Morrison (2020) and Audre Lorde (2019). Finally, the reflections of the analyses point to the existence of a significant impact of the three expressions of love — self-love, maternal love and community love — analyzed in the work regarding the construction of relationships and identity of the characters, as well as contributions to the promotion of their healing processes in temporalities that challenge the notion of linearity. It is also worth noting that the work highlights the importance of investigating productions such as Beloved, where the perspectives of Black voices, historically neglected and silenced, are explored and recognized |
