A REPRESENTAÇÃO FEMININA NA PERSONAGEM ANGELA CLANDON, EM “O LEGADO”, DE VIRGINIA WOOLF

Abstract

The aim of this work is to analyze in the short story “The legacy” (1958), by the English writer Virginia Woolf, the female representation through the main character, Angela Clandon, in the context of her marriage to Gilbert Clandon. Thus, a brief review of the critical fortune regarding Virginia Woolf and his writings was prepared based on texts by Oliveira (2017) and Prather (2005). To develop the concept of female condition, we take as a base the studies of Moreira (2003). In order to discuss female authorship, we will present texts by the writers Gloria Anzaldúa (1981), Alice Walker (1972) and Virginia Woolf (2014). Therefore, a brief analysis of this main female character will be made considering her relationship with the other characters in the plot: her husband Gilbert Clandon, her employee and friend Sissy Miller and Miller’s brother, identified only by the initials B.M. Finally, from the analysis of this short story, it is possible to conclude Angela was subjected to her marriage, which silenced her and led her to write diaries, and that was the only place where she had her voice truly expressed.
