"ISTO FAZ UM BEM": Uma análise da focalização em Big Driver

Abstract

Mass literature has the ability to create a relationship between a literary work and the reader's daily life, by introducing elements present in the social context, whether they are real or imaginary and with a more subtle language. With that in mind, we can see that that the work of writer Stephen King is increasingly in evidence. In his stories and horror novels, he portrays fantastic situations in an environment similar to the realistic one. This work aims to analyze Stephen King's short story Big Driver and aims to study the narrative element of focalization in the protagonist's decision making. The study is hypothetical-deductive in nature. For a critical reading of this story, we take as a reference authors such as Jonathan Culler (1997), Terry Eagleton (2006) Tzevan Todorov (2009), Edgar Allan Poe (1846), H. P. Lovecraft (1973), Gerárd Genette (1979), Mieke Bal (2009). When analyzing this short story, it was possible to notice the possibility of academically analyzing a work of mass literature. We also noticed the influence of Tom, Fritzy and Doreen's focalization on Tessa Jean's revenge plans and decisions during the unfolding of the narrative as well as the regaining of control of her life after a traumatic event.
