"THE BLACK CAT" DE EDGAR ALLAN POE: ANÁLISE COMPARATIVA ENTRE A TRADUÇÃO DE JOSÉ PAULO PAES E A TRADUÇÃO/ADAPTAÇÃO INFANTO- JUVENIL DE CLARICE LISPECTOR

Abstract

This work aims to understand the differences between the translation of the short story “The black cat” by Edgar Allan Poe made by José Paulo Paes and the children's and youth's translation/adaptation of the same story by Clarice Lispector and how the translation/adaptation of Lispector could be more attractive to this audience. Therefore, its general objective is to investigate Paes' choices when directing his work to the general public in comparison to Lispector who directs his work to children, adolescents and young people with few reading habits. As specific objectives: to identify whether the changes made by Lispector include what we could expect from a work for children and young people such as simplified vocabulary, mitigated violence and reduced text. To achieve these objectives, a qualitative methodological approach with a bibliographic and documentary procedure was carried out, which found support in theorists such as Arrojo (2007), Britto (2012), Milton (2015), Oustinoff (2015), Rosenbaum (2002), Venuti (2008), among others. For this purpose, comparisons between Paes' translation and Lispector's children's and youth's translation/adaptation, compared with Poe's original work, were carried out taking into consideration the information of the mentioned theorists. In the results, we conclude that there was no simplification of the vocabulary and no attenuation of the violence while the text reduction was evidenced through omitted information. In addition, we identified something we were not looking for: Lispector changed the order of some information, deciding which should be presented first.
